Part of Why a creator discovery budget must price the whole workflow, not the login
How to calculate creator discovery platforms return on investment
Learn how to calculate creator discovery platforms return on investment from reviewed incremental contribution and whole-life cost, not platform attribution.
Creator discovery platforms return on investment is unavailable until the buyer has both reviewed causal evidence and a complete cost denominator. Profiles viewed, creators shortlisted or platform-attributed orders do not meet that test.
What to take away
- Store operational, attribution, reconciled commercial and causal evidence classes separately to avoid double counting.
- Incremental retained contribution is the counterfactual difference, not a before-and-after change.
- Whole-life cost covers discovery software, labour, creator consideration, media, production and compliance.
Label each evidence class
An operational observation records what happened in the workflow, such as eligible records reviewed. A platform attribution applies a provider's rule to an event. A reconciled commercial observation links internal transaction records to a stated period and population. Causal incrementality estimates the difference made by the tool compared with what would otherwise have happened.
A buyer might hold a platform's attributed-orders CSV export, a signed insertion order, or the purchase ledger line for the software subscription.
Four Evidence Classes Kept Separate
Operational observation
- What it records
- workflow events
- Example
- eligible records reviewed
- Can be called incremental
- no
Platform attribution
- What it records
- provider rule applied
- Example
- claimed outcome
- Can be called incremental
- no
Reconciled commercial observation
- What it records
- internal records linked
- Example
- revenue to period
- Can be called incremental
- no
Causal incrementality
- What it records
- difference vs counterfactual
- Example
- tool's causal effect
- Can be called incremental
- yes, if credible
Store these classes separately. Multiple platforms may claim the same outcome, and a change after procurement may have other causes. The government's quality guidance for policy impact evaluation is the Magenta Book. It explains the need for a strong counterfactual when attributing causal effects, and it is public-policy guidance used as a methodological boundary, not proof about a commercial campaign.
A platform attribution export needs reconciling before it enters the contribution build. Match each claimed order to the buyer's transaction record for the stated period, remove rows claimed by more than one provider, and leave unreconciled rows out of the eligible population.
Define the counterfactual
Use the buyer-owned manual register as the candidate comparator, if it is genuinely feasible. Specify the eligible buyer tasks, campaign population, start and end dates, exposure or assignment rule, outcome window, missing data, exclusions, interference risks, and changes in creative, offer, media, creator mix and measurement. Any of these could break comparability.
Counterfactual Specification Checklist
- Eligible buyer tasks
- Campaign population
- Start and end dates
- Exposure or assignment rule
- Outcome window
- Missing data and exclusions
- Interference risks
A before-and-after difference alone is observational. If the buyer cannot create a credible comparison, report monitored outcomes and attribution as such. Do not label them incremental.
Practical causal evidence methods include a holdout group, a geo test across comparable regions, or a matched control built from the manual register.
Build retained contribution
Begin with an approved internal definition:
From Reconciled Revenue to Incremental Contribution
- Eligible reconciled revenue or buyer-defined value
- Minus returns, fulfilment, payment costs
- Minus creator consideration and paid media
- Minus other agreed variable costs
- Equals eligible retained contribution
- Minus counterfactual retained contribution
- Equals incremental retained contribution
eligible retained contribution = eligible reconciled revenue or buyer-defined value - returns - fulfilment - payment costs - creator consideration - paid media - other agreed variable costs
The eligible population, deduction rules, currency, VAT basis, period, source queries and owner must sit beside the formula. Finance and accounting must approve every term.
Then estimate only the counterfactual difference:
incremental retained contribution = retained contribution with the intervention - estimated retained contribution under the approved counterfactual
State uncertainty and model limitations. Do not substitute a supplier case study, attribution report or engagement metric.
Complete the denominator
Whole-life cost includes discovery software, implementation, managed and internal labour, creator consideration, media, production, research, privacy and PECR, safeguarding, rights, advertising review, security, accessibility, measurement, support, correction and exit. Use committed, incurred, invoiced, paid and forecast views distinctly.
Examples of creator discovery platforms include CreatorIQ, Traackr and Upfluence. Typical cost components include an annual subscription per seat, credit packs for profile access or data exports, and an onboarding fee.
Whole-Life Cost Denominator
- Discovery software and implementation
- Managed and internal labour
- Creator consideration and media
- Production and research
- Privacy, PECR and safeguarding
- Rights, advertising review and security
- Accessibility, measurement, support, correction, exit
HMRC explains the evidence needed for reclaiming VAT on business expenses. It does not decide whether VAT belongs in this buyer's economic denominator. Obtain case-specific tax and accounting review.
Leave the return blank until review
Only after the numerator and denominator pass:
ROI = (reviewed incremental retained contribution - whole-life cost) / whole-life cost
State period, currency, VAT basis, population, counterfactual method and uncertainty with the result. If whole-life cost is zero, missing or inconsistent, do not calculate. If causal evidence is absent, use an operational evaluation instead.
Worked example with placeholder figures: eligible retained contribution = £100,000 - £10,000 - £5,000 - £5,000 - £10,000 - £5,000 = £65,000. Incremental retained contribution = £65,000 - £50,000 = £15,000. Whole-life cost = £20,000. ROI = (£15,000 - £20,000) / £20,000 = minus 0.25, or minus 25 per cent.
Privacy and PECR, safeguarding, IP, advertising, security and accessibility failures stop the project regardless of a modelled financial result.
Privacy and PECR means the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, enforced by the Information Commission (named in PECR regulation 31 from 30 September 2026, replacing the Information Commissioner's Office). Safeguarding includes Disclosure and Barring Service checks and the Online Safety Act 2023 duties for services likely to be accessed by children.
Advertising is governed by the CAP Code enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority. IP is governed by the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. Accessibility is governed by the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
This method gives no forecast, guarantee or investment advice; the present ROI field remains HOLD.
Set review and retirement rules
The finance owner should state which evidence refreshes the calculation and which event invalidates it. Examples include a changed product edition, revised creator-consideration terms, a new media plan, altered attribution logic, missing transaction records or a failed control gate. Use buyer-set thresholds only after the relevant evidence exists.
Review at contract renewal and 90 days after the campaign period closes.
Store the original result, revised inputs, reason and approver. Do not backfill later knowledge into an earlier forecast. Separate a contracted supplier claim from a buyer observation and keep both away from the causal estimate.
Retire the ROI measure when the comparison is no longer credible, the intervention and baseline overlap, data loss prevents reconciliation, or the outcome period is incomplete. The decision record may still describe cost, workflow activity and uncertainty. It should say that causal return is not estimable, rather than replacing the missing answer with attributed revenue.
Before you act
- Label each evidence class before using it.
- Define the counterfactual and its assignment rules.
- Get finance and accounting approval for every formula term.
- Build the whole-life cost denominator.
- State period, currency, VAT basis and uncertainty.
- Set review and retirement rules for the measure.
Common questions
What evidence is needed before an ROI figure can be calculated?
The buyer needs reviewed causal evidence and a complete cost denominator. Profiles viewed, creators shortlisted and platform-attributed orders do not meet that test.
How should a buyer treat platform attribution claims?
Store platform attribution separately from operational, reconciled commercial and causal evidence. Multiple platforms may claim the same outcome, and a change after procurement may have other causes.
When should the ROI measure be retired?
Retire it when the comparison is no longer credible, the intervention and baseline overlap, data loss prevents reconciliation, or the outcome period is incomplete. The decision record may still describe cost, workflow activity and uncertainty, and should say causal return is not estimable.
